JAM LISTS
Tunes & songs that are likely to be played during the
beginning and intermediate jams at American Banjo Camp.
Note that these lists are far from complete;
the tunes played at the jams will be whatever tunes the jammers come up with,
but these lists will give you an idea of typical tunes that might very well be
played. From time to time the tunes on these lists will change... Just
recently they were put in popularity order; that is to say, the tunes at the
top are the ones we think are the most likely to be played.

Bluegrass jam notes
The songs and tunes in the bluegrass beginner jams will usually
be played slower than those at the intermediate jams,
and in the beginner jams keys like A, Bb, or B (that are usually played with
a capo) may be replaced by G, but it's worth bringing a capo anyway.
In the beginner jams someone will teach the chords and you don't need to
play a break; chording along and trying to hear where the chords change is
also good (and good for you!).
If you play another bluegrass instrument,
(fiddle, guitar, mandolin, bass, dobro, etc.)
bring it along and switch off now and then to rest your banjo-picking
fingers and make the jams more balanced.
If you're not sure your other instrument is appropriate (electric kazoo, for
instance) consult with Peter or Ken before lugging it to camp.

Old-Time jam notes
The songs and tunes played in the old time beginner jams will usually
be played slower than those at the intermediate jams,
but the keys will usually remain the same.
Sometimes a tune that's usually played in A or D with a capo will be played
in G or C without, but bring a capo just to be on the safe side.
In the beginner jams someone will teach the chords and you don't need to
play the melody. For that matter, playing every third or fourth note of
the melody (as long as the rhythm is right) can be the perfect accompaniment.
Just chording along and trying to hear where the chords change is also good
(and good for you!).
If you play another old-time instrument,
(fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo-uke, etc.)
bring it along and switch off now and then to rest your banjo-picking
fingers and help make the jams more balanced.
if you're not sure whether your other instrument is really appropriate
(bongos?) ask Ken or Peter for advice.
