ABC Bluegrass Banjo Workshops
Saturday, May 8th, 2021

11:00 - 12:15

Tom Adams
Playing Breaks, Backup, & Endings on Vocal Numbers in the D Chord Position
Take the licks and rolls you play in Open G position and convert them into the building blocks of playing solid breaks and backup in the D chord position. (You’ll stay in G Tuning and hook your 5th string at the 7th fret A note for this class.)

12:30 - 1:45

Frank Evans
Picking Up the Speed
From his experiences playing in the award-winning band, the Slocan Ramblers, Frank Evans offers tips for picking up the pace of the songs you already know, and strategies for reaching those blistering fast tempos that are often characteristic of bluegrass music.

2:00 - 3:15

James McKinney
The Art of Single-String Playing in Bluegrass
Earl Scruggs pioneered an approach to fingerstyle banjo based on interlocking roll patterns, but Done Reno created the "single-string approach" in which rapid runs of notes are obtained via alternating down- and up- strokes of thumb and index finger, like using a flatpick. Mastering single-string style is your gateway to jazz, swing, blues and many other musical genres.

3:30 - 4:45

Kristin Scott Benson
Up the Neck Backup: Concepts & Techniques
We will take a layered approach to up-the-neck backup, starting with a skeleton roll that works for most any song. Then, we will slowly enhance the pattern, one detail at a time, to grow your backup into something solid and interesting. For return students, this is a similar approach to what we did last time with down-the-neck backup.
